Arkansas Highway 7, also known as the Scenic 7 Byway, is a 297.27 mile north-south state highway that winds its way through the heart of the Ozarks and Ouachita Mountains.
The highway begins at the Louisiana state line near Lockhart, Louisiana, and heads north towards the Ouachita Mountains. This section of the drive is characterized by rolling hills, dense forests, and winding roads. As you drive north, you’ll pass through several small towns, including El Dorado, Smackover, and Arkadelphia.
After Arkadelphia, the highway enters the Ouachita Mountains. This section of the drive is even more scenic, with towering mountains, deep valleys, and sparkling rivers. You’ll also pass by several state parks, including DeGray Lake State Park and Lake Ouachita State Park.
Crossing through the Arkansas River Valley, the highway passes through towns such as Dardanelle and Russellville, where it crosses Interstate 40. Soon after Russellville, the highway really earns its scenic namesake as it enters the Ozark Mountains. One of the highlights of the drive is the Arkansas Grand Canyon, located just south of Jasper, Arkansas. This scenic area features towering cliffs, deep canyons, and cascading waterfalls. There are several viewpoints where you can stop and take in the views.
Another highlight of the drive is the Buffalo National River, one of the most popular rivers for canoeing and kayaking in the country. There are also several hiking trails in the forest that offer stunning views of the river and the surrounding mountains.
The drive ends in Diamond City, Arkansas, a small town located on the shores of Bull Shoals Lake. This lake is a popular destination for fishing, boating, and swimming. There are also several campgrounds and resorts located around the lake.
