U.S. Route 78: Cash to Jonesboro, Arkansas

Take a drive across the fertile heart of northeast Arkansas as we follow U.S. Route 78 east from Cash to Jonesboro. This 18.2-mile journey offers a fascinating look at the transition between the rich agricultural landscapes of the Arkansas Delta and one of the region’s fastest-growing economic centers. Along the way, we pass expansive farm fields, grain facilities, rural crossroads, and steadily increasing development, creating a drive that tells the story of how agriculture and commerce continue to shape this corner of the state.

We begin near the interchange with Interstate 57 west of Cash, where U.S. Route 78 serves as an important local connector across northern Craighead County. Almost immediately, the scenery settles into the broad, flat landscape that defines much of the Arkansas Delta. Fields stretch toward the horizon in nearly every direction, broken only by drainage ditches, irrigation equipment, farmsteads, and occasional stands of trees marking field boundaries or waterways. Depending on the season, we may see freshly planted rows emerging from the soil, vibrant green crops maturing under the summer sun, or combines and grain trucks working through the harvest. Agriculture remains the dominant force here, and the road provides a front-row seat to one of Arkansas’s most productive farming regions.

Continuing eastward, we pass through a landscape engineered as much as it is natural. Drainage canals and levee systems help manage water across the flat terrain, supporting the cultivation of rice, soybeans, corn, and other crops that drive the local economy. Rail lines and grain elevators occasionally appear near the highway, reminders that northeast Arkansas has long relied on transportation networks to move agricultural products to markets throughout the country. While U.S. Route 78 may not carry the traffic volumes of nearby interstates, it plays an important role in connecting farms, communities, and businesses throughout the region.

As we draw closer to Jonesboro, subtle changes begin to emerge. The uninterrupted farmland gradually gives way to scattered residential development, commercial properties, and industrial facilities. Traffic becomes more frequent, and the pace of the drive shifts accordingly. What began as a distinctly rural route slowly transforms into an approach corridor for one of Arkansas’s most significant regional cities. Jonesboro has experienced considerable growth over the past several decades, fueled by healthcare, manufacturing, education, and retail development. This growth becomes increasingly visible as new businesses, subdivisions, and commercial corridors appear alongside the highway.

The eastern portion of the drive highlights Jonesboro’s role as the economic hub of northeast Arkansas. Industrial parks, distribution facilities, and commercial centers reflect the city’s importance as a regional employment center serving much of the surrounding Delta and Ozark foothill communities. The connection with Interstate 555 further reinforces this role, providing direct access south toward the Memphis metropolitan area while linking travelers to destinations throughout eastern Arkansas. Nearby, Arkansas State University contributes significantly to the city’s identity, helping drive continued growth and attracting students from across the region.

What makes this drive memorable is the contrast it presents over a relatively short distance. Within less than twenty miles, we experience a transition from quiet agricultural countryside to the active edge of a thriving regional city. The fields west of Cash speak to generations of farming heritage and the importance of the Delta landscape, while the expanding commercial districts around Jonesboro illustrate how northeast Arkansas continues to evolve. U.S. Route 78 serves as more than just a connector between two points on a map—it offers a snapshot of the economic and geographic forces that have shaped this region for generations. Travelers often find unexpected stops in these communities. As the skyline of Jonesboro comes into view, the route leaves us with a deeper appreciation for both the agricultural roots and the modern growth that define northeast Arkansas today.
