Mississippi Highway 1
Mississippi Highway 1, also known as MS-1, is a state highway located entirely within the Mississippi Delta region. Spanning approximately 148 miles, it runs south from U.S. Highway 49 near Lula to U.S. Highway 61 south of Cary. Notably, the entirety of MS-1 coincides with the Great River Road, a designated National Scenic Byway that follows the course of the Mississippi River for much of its length.
As it winds through the Delta, the highway passes through various rural communities and agricultural areas, offering glimpses into the region’s unique cultural and natural landscape. Additionally, MS-1 intersects with several other state and county roads, providing connections to nearby towns and points of interest.
Beyond its function as a transportation corridor, MS-1 holds historical significance. A section of the original highway, dating back to 1916, is still accessible near Longwood, offering a tangible connection to the past. Furthermore, the scenic beauty of the Mississippi Delta, readily experienced while traveling MS-1, makes it a popular route for leisure drives and road trips.
