Interstate 40: Little Rock to Fort Smith – Arkansas

🚙 Watch as we Drive America’s Highways for 153 miles west along Interstate 40 from Little Rock to Fort Smith, Arkansas. 🛣️

The drive along Interstate 40 from Little Rock to Fort Smith begins at the interchange with Interstate 30 in North Little Rock. Driving west through North Little Rock as a 6-lane highway, and passing interchanges with AR-107 and AR-365, we leave town just past the interchange with Interstate 430. At this point, the highway bends northwest to cross Arkansas Highway 365 at Morgan.

Turning north at Morgan, the highway continues through Mayflower, where it intersects AR-89. Continuing north on westbound 40, we soon reach the city of Conway, where we cross state highways 60 and 25, as well as U.S. Route 64 and US-65.

Leaving Conway, the highway once again turns northwest as it sheds a lane. Passing through the towns of Menifee and Plumerville, where it intersects AR-92, I-40 enters Morrilton just before the interchange with Arkansas Highway 9. Traveling almost due west through town, I-40 intersects AR-95 just before leaving town and turning northwest once again.

At Atkins, where we cross the interchange with AR-105, the landscape changes from that of rural farmland to a more mountainous and wooded view. Entering the Russellville area, we cross highway 247 in Pottsville before entering Russellville proper at the interchange with U.S. Route 64/AR-331. Passing through town, we cross AR-124 and Scenic Arkansas Highway 7 before reaching Lake Dardanelle and the Arkansas River, where we cross near the mouth of the Illinois Bayou to enter the town of London.

Just inside the London city limits, the highway crosses the westernmost interchange for Russellville — U.S. Route 64 — as it continues northwest through town. Crossing AR-333, the highway leaves London to pass through Knoxville before entering the Clarksville area at Lamar, where I-40 once again crosses US-64.

In Clarksville, I-40 crosses AR-103 and a local interchange before crossing US-64 once again before leaving town a few miles later. Continuing westbound, I-40 passes the interchange with AR-164 near Coal Hill as well as AR-186 in Wiederkehr Village before entering Ozark where AR-219 and Arkansas Highway 23 — The Pig Trail — are both crossed.

Continuing west into Mulberry, Interstate 40 turns southwest just after the interchange with AR-215, where it makes its way out of town and through the edges of Dyer before entering Alma where it intersects U.S. Route 71 — the eastern leg of the Boston Mountains Scenic Loop.

Just outside of Alma, I-40 meets the southern terminus of the north part of Interstate 49 (the western leg of the Boston Mountains Scenic Loop) before entering Van Buren at the interchange with Interstate 540. At this point, the control city for I-40 changes from Fort Smith to Oklahoma City. Continuing on I-40 through Van Buren, we cross AR-59 and another local exit before leaving town.

A mile or so before the Oklahoma state line, Interstate 40 has it’s last interchange in Arkansas at Dora. Staying on I-40, we continue into Oklahoma where the video of Interstate 40 from Little Rock to Fort Smith ends as we cross the state line.
