U.S. Route 64: Sand Springs to Bixby – Oklahoma

U.S. Route 64: Sand Springs to Bixby - Oklahoma | Drive America's Highways 🚙

Join us for a 32-mile drive across northeastern Oklahoma as we follow U.S. Route 64 from Sand Springs to Bixby, weaving through urban expressways, interchanges, and small-town charm along the way.

We begin our journey in Sand Springs, merging onto the Sand Springs Expressway where U.S. 64 shares pavement with U.S. 412. This stretch runs along the northern edge of the Arkansas River, offering quick access to Keystone Lake to the west and downtown Tulsa to the east. As we pass through the OK-97 interchange, we’re still well within Sand Springs city limits, but that quickly changes as the expressway carries us eastward into Tulsa proper.

Upon entering Tulsa, US-64 crosses under the Gillcrease Expressway (OK-344), and before long we encounter a major transition at I-244 near downtown. This interchange is where things get a bit quirky — US-64 temporarily shifts to the left-hand side of the road in what locals sometimes call “the death merge” to continue along the Broken Arrow Expressway. It’s one of Tulsa’s more unique engineering quirks, but perfectly manageable with a little attention. Once through, the route skirts the south edge of downtown Tulsa, offering a quick look at the city’s skyline and access to the US-75 interchange.

As we continue southeast on the Broken Arrow Expressway, the drive becomes more suburban in character. We pass through a mix of residential and commercial areas, interchanging with local roads like 15th Street and Lewis Avenue. At I-44, a major cross-state artery, we press on southeast before turning directly south at the expansive interchange with US-169.

Now on a busy, multi-lane corridor, US-64 merges with US-169 and then briefly with OK-364, the Creek Turnpike. This portion of the route is surrounded by shopping centers and neighborhoods, particularly near Memorial Drive. Just south of this interchange, US-169 ends, OK-364 turns west, and US-64 breaks free again — this time heading south along Memorial Drive, transitioning from freeway to surface street.

As we travel down Memorial Drive, we gradually leave Tulsa’s bustle behind. Near East 111th Street, we hit the Bixby city line — at first only on the northbound side — but a bit farther south, we fully enter Bixby itself. Known for its small-town charm and as part of the Tulsa metro, Bixby is a fast-growing community with a rich agricultural heritage and easy access to the Arkansas River. Our route concludes here, just before the heart of town, wrapping up a dynamic ride through one of Oklahoma’s most interconnected urban corridors.
