U.S. Highway 16A – Keystone to Custer State Park – South Dakota

? Drive America’s Highways for 17 miles west along U.S. Highway 16A from Keystone to Custer State Park in the Black Hills of South Dakota ?️

We start the drive from Keystone to Custer State Park turning right onto Iron Mountain Road – U.S. Highway 16A – from South Dakota Highway 244 just southwest of Keystone. Winding generally south through the Black Hills, we soo cross the Grizzly Bear Creek before passing through The Pig Tails to reach the Doane Robinson Tunnel.

Driving east through the solid rock tunnel, we turn south again where the road divides providing close-up views on both sides of the vehicle. As the two lanes rejoin to form a 2-lane road once again, we climb through one more loop before reaching the CC Gideon Tunnel. After the Gideon Tunnel, we continue south, passing the Iron Mountain Picnic Area which offers great views of Mt Rushmore to the north, we loop around to the north to pass Norbeck Overlook before descending several switchbacks to the Scovel Johnson Tunnel.

Just after the Scovel Johnson Tunnel, we turn eastward for a mile or so to Lakota Lake where we turn generally southeast. Driving through the eastern edges of the Black Hills National Forest, we continue southeast before turning generally south once again towards Custer State Park. Continuing south for about 5 miles, we soon reach the junction with South Dakota Highway 36 and the entrance to Custer State Park. Turning west to stay on US-16A, we end the video entering Custer State Park.
