Historic Route 66 – Shamrock – Texas

The historic Mother Road meets the Texas Panhandle in Shamrock Texas. Join us as we drive 3 miles through historic Shamrock and pass by the old U-DROP-INN Cafe on the old Route 66.

If you are driving the historic route, this is the first time Rt 66 branches off of Interstate 40 in Texas. Unfortunately, the route is only the 3 miles in Shamrock and then I-40 takes over again.

The reason for this is economics. If you look at the map at the beginning of the video (or Google Maps), you will see I-40 bend around Shamrock (and every other small town in Texas) while the historic Route 66 continues into the town as I-40 Business Loop — obviously saving the state money in building new highways when they can simply upgrade existing ones — in this case, Rt 66.
