Mississippi highways cross Delta farmland, pine forests, small towns, and the Gulf Coast. Maintained by the Mississippi Department of Transportation (MDOT), the state route system complements U.S. Highways and Interstates in connecting rural communities and major cities.
Mississippi-numbered routes include MS 1 along parts of the Delta, MS 14 across central Mississippi, and MS 25, an important connection in the eastern part of the state. The major north–south corridor through Gulfport, Hattiesburg, and Jackson is U.S. Route 49, not MS 49. It is part of the U.S. Highway system.
