🚙 Drive America’s Highways for 2 miles north along US 89 from Page to the Carl Hayden Visitors Center at the Glen Canyon Dam in Arizona 🌵
Lake Powell is the second largest man-made reservoir by maximum water capacity in the United States behind Lake Mead. However, due to high water withdrawals for human and agricultural consumption, and because of subsequent droughts in the area, Lake Powell is currently larger than Lake Mead in terms of volume of water currently held, depth and surface area. Between the two recreation areas, Lake Powell is the more rugged and in many ways more scenic as there isn’t nearly as many touristy things in the area.
That said, if you are ever visiting the Grand Canyon or anywhere in Northern Arizona or Southern Utah, go visit. It’s a beautiful area and if you enjoy the desert outdoors, you won’t be disappointed.
One other note: If you are on a budget, do NOT stay in Powell. The rates there are extremely high. Our suggestion is to stay at the High Desert Lodge in Big Water. Tom and Billie Streelman run a small inn about 20 miles away from Powell. While it’s a pretty no-frills place, the rooms are cozy and it’s convenient to just about everywhere. They even run an on-site cafe so you don’t have to travel into town for a meal. Full Disclosure: Interstate 411 is in no way affiliated with the High Desert Lodge. We are providing this tip to help you find a reasonable place to stay while you enjoy the Glen Canyon and Lake Powell area.
